Lodge and resort owners in northern Wisconsin are hoping for some more "white gold" — AKA, snow — as this season's warmer weather continues to hurt their bottom line.

El Nino has many northern Wisconsin resort owners a little hot under the collar. Susan Heil, who owns Booth Lake Landing Resort in Minocqua, said that the unseasonably warm weather has resulted in cancellations.

"This is the very first year in 27 years that my lake has been open at Christmas time. Because of it, we have lost customers that had booked and canceled," she said.

Mogasheen Resort owner Patsy Rieckhoff advised some loyal customers from Missouri to cancel their trip north for the holidays.

"It's a hard thing to do because you lose the revenue, but I don't want them to be riding on the lake and then have an open spot. There's just certain areas on the lake that aren't safe yet," she said.

The two are hoping snow and cold will improve conditions on trails and lakes.

The National Weather Service is forecasting up to 8 inches for northern Wisconsin through noon on Tuesday.
