Walker: ‘Sideshows’ Make It Tougher For Trump To Win

Gov. Scott Walker says he still thinks Donald Trump can win the presidency if he gets voters to focus on him instead of a flurry of what Walker calls “sideshow” issues.

Earlier this week, Trump named Stephen Bannon as his new campaign CEO. Bannon runs the conservative Breitbart News and has been sharply critical of House Speaker Paul Ryan of Janesville, describing Ryan as an insider who was “raised in a petri dish” at the free market Heritage Foundation.

Asked about the shakeup, Walker told reporters the entire campaign has been unconventional.

“My hope is in the end that it won’t be about who campaign chairs are who campaign consultants are, but what’s the difference between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump,” Walker said.

But some of what Walker calls sideshows have been directed at him. For example, longtime Trump confidant Roger Stone wrote in an op-ed that Walker and Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus had “rigged” as many as five elections, including Walker’s recall and this year’s April presidential primary.

“Apparently that’s what the long-term effect is of legalizing marijuana in the District of Columbia,” Walker said, dismissing Stone’s comments.

While other Republicans have kept their distance from Trump, Walker has recently become a more visible supporter, including introducing Trump at a Tuesday rally in West Bend.
