A University of Wisconsin-Barron County professor has joined a crowded field of Democrats seeking to defeat 7th District U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy.
Mary Hoeft, a communications arts professor, said she is running for Congress to stop cuts to education and social security.
“The cuts that are being made when Republicans are in charge, the cuts to education, the cuts to social security, cuts on those who can least afford it, Hoeft said. “And so I’ve decided, enough is enough.”

She said she is also concerned about a Republican Party led by presumptive nominee Donald Trump.
“Donald Trump frightens me,” Hoeft said. “I think about the Muslim students that I have in my classes. Right now, Donald Trump, with his position, ‘Round up those Muslims and keep an eye on them.’ We need to understand different cultures.”
Hoeft will compete in the Democratic Party primary with labor leader Phil Salamone, Marathon County Board member Joel Lewis, and citizen activist Ethel Quisler. Republican Duffy is running for his fourth term in the sprawling northern Wisconsin district.
