The director of Wisconsin’s embattled Government Accountability Board is defending the agency against what he says are false allegations made by a Republican state senator.
In a statement released Tuesday, Kevin Kennedy refuted 14 allegations made by Sen. Leah Vukmir about the GAB’s mismanagement of elections and campaign finance rules. Vukmir made the statements while giving testimony on a bill that would eliminate the GAB.
Kennedy says Vukmir’s assertions are inaccurate and, in some, cases completely false.

“What’s driving that agenda is primarily a control factor,” Kennedy said. “The people in power want to control the entity that is charged by statute with insuring full disclosure of activities.”
Vukmir released her own statement Tuesday. In it she called Kennedy’s defense of the board a last-ditch effort “to save his job.”
The state Assembly has already passed the bill eliminating the GAB, but some Republican senators say they can’t support it without significant changes. Kennedy said he believes many don’t want to replace the board with partisan appointees.
