Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson will face Democratic challenger Russ Feingold on Friday in their first of two U.S. senatorial debates in the 2016 election cycle.
The hour-long event, beginning at 7 p.m. in Green Bay, will be a return to the debate stage for both men after Johnson unseated Feingold in 2010, ending his 16-year tenure in the Senate.
While Feingold has consistently led polls this time around, recent polling has shown the rematch race tightening, making this debate, and a second next week in Milwaukee, potentially pivotal in determining the outcome in November. Beyond Wisconsin, the race could be decisive in the GOP’s attempt to maintain their majority in the Senate.
