A 17-year-old male was shot and killed by police Sunday night in a Mayfair Mall parking lot in Wauwatosa. The suspect allegedly had a handgun and was running from police.

Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber said during a press conference following the shooting that the incident occurred shortly after mall security reported a disturbance involving at least 10 people inside the mall around 5:41 p.m.

An eyewitness told police that at least one person had a handgun.

When officers found the group, Weber said that four people fled on foot and one of them matched the description of the suspect in possession of a gun. During a foot pursuit, one officer fired at the male suspect who allegedly had the handgun.

Weber said officers immediately provided life-saving measures and the Wauwatosa Fire Department transported the suspect to Froedtert Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m.

The officers involved were placed on leave, which Weber said is a standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.

“We are limited to what we can say and what we know at this point,” Weber said.

The name of the teen and the officers involved have not been released.

The Milwaukee Police Department will be the lead agency investigating the shooting.

“In order to maintain the integrity of the investigation and respecting the judicial process, we ask for everyone’s patience as the investigation is ongoing,” Weber said.
