Kathleen Smith is the Manoomin Ganawandang, Ojibwe for “she who takes care of the rice,” with the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission. She previously worked as a habitat specialist for native plants and wild rice restoration for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Country Natural Resources Department in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and as a fire engine captain for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Southern California.
