Derek S. Jeffreys is a professor of religion and philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. His research focuses on ethics and violence, and he has written books on torture and solitary confinement. His most recent is “America’s Jails: The Search for Human Dignity in an Age of Mass Incarceration.”
