Chelsea Manning

Chelsea Manning is an activist and whistleblower. As an army intelligence analyst in Iraq in 2010, Manning disclosed more than 700,000 classified and sensitive military documents, including America’s secret diplomatic cables and Iraqi and Afghanistan war logs, to the anonymous website known as WikiLeaks. Convicted in 2013 of violating the Espionage Act, Manning was imprisoned until 2017 when her sentence was commuted by then-President Barack Obama. Since leaving prison, Manning has spoken in favor of expanded government openness and transparency activism. She’s been branded as both a hero and traitor. To some, she’s seen as someone who exposed America’s hypocrisy in international relations to the world. To others, she betrayed the country she swore to protect.
