With over 30 years of rendering edifying music from various traditions in a positive and illuminating light and complete with messages about love, life, struggle and hope, Sweet Honey In The Rock has never avoided taking on painful social issues with grace, passion and power.
This womanist collective not only champions the voice of women in music, but also the voice of marginalized people here in the U.S. and abroad. Before her retirement, Bernice Reagon Johnson, founder and oft lead singer, was the stone upon which the group stood.
In fairness to their full body of work, listeners should taste samples from several of their recorded materials – Doing so will afford you the opportunity to dine on musical narratives steeped in the human condition. Simply put, they rock!
