It does seem so that Lila Downs’ music and certainly her rich deep contralto voice just keeps getting better and better as the years go by and, as her albums are released for the world and her adoring fans to experience and enjoy. Downs is invested with a sweeping command of her voice, extensive vocal range not to mention her moving and captivating expressionism, all of which are illumined within each track featured on her latest recording by Sony Music, 2017.
The instrumentalists surrounding her are most accomplished and, if you speak Spanish, you’ll wed yourself to the most passionate moments of her music making (and if you don’t you’ll still ‘feel’ her humanity on every melodic line). And, by all means if you have the opportunity to witness her in concert, run to get tickets.
This is an album dedicated to sustaining her commitment to indigenous Mexican roots and North American music. As an aside, it would be a mistake to pass over over her affinity for other world music genres including jazz explored with her newest album, “Salón Lágrimas y Deseo”. It lures you in to the traditional music and the cultural life and spirit of her homeland, Mexico. *****Stars. –Jonathan
