The group Sierra Maestra, headed up by Juan d'Marcos Gonzales (on the left), is a nine-piece son band originally from Havana and one of the finest and most popular musical ensembles performing in the Spanish Caribbean today largely because of their commitment to the old-style son of the 1920s and '30s. I caught up with Gonzales, at UW-Madison during his residency linked to Cuban music. He is indeed a living legend.

This week’s edition features music by: Manish Vyas, Baabal Maal, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Nina Simone, Julie Fowlis, the all-women’s Mariachi flor De Toloache ensemble, Linda Thompson, Keb Mo’, African Rhythm Travellers, Ella and Louis, Jackie Oates, Balkan Beat Box, Algeria’s Fadela & Sahraoui, hugh Masekela, Perez Prado, Mahalia Jackson, Paul Robeson, Toumani Diabate, Cesaria Evora, Harry Koizumi, Korrontzi, Natacha Atlas and more.
