Brown County District Attorney Dave Lasee said two Green Bay police officers were justified when they fatally shot 30-year-old Joseph Beigert in February.
Lasee won’t file charges against officers Matthew Dunn and Brian Krueger. He said an investigation by the state Department of Justice makes it clear the officers legitimately feared for their lives after Beigert stabbed one of them with a kitchen knife.
“It was after that point and after the officers attempting to use several methods of non-lethal force that they ultimately made the decision to exercise their self defense right and use lethal force,” Lasee said.

The officers had been called to check on Biegert’s welfare after hearing a report that he had taken an unknown amount of medication in an attempt to harm himself. Biegert was shot nine times and died at the scene. The officers were returned to duty earlier this month based on the findings of the investigation.
