Madison Mayor Paul Soglin called Thursday’s fatal shooting of five Dallas police officers a “horrible stain on our country.”
Thursday’s ambush following an otherwise peaceful protest in the Texas city’s downtown is an incident that could happen anywhere, Soglin said.
“Dallas is a thousand miles away, but today, it’s right next door and with that in mind, perhaps we could just start out with a moment of silence.”

Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said the department has received an “outpouring of support.”
The shooting might bring unity between police and the community because there’s an appreciation of those who are suffering, whether they wear a police uniform or not, Koval said.
