Grothman Wins Re-Election To 3rd Term In Congress

Republican U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman has defeated his Democratic opponent to win his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives for Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District.

Grothman faced Democrat Dan Kohl who has never held elected office, though he has worked for J-Street, a nonprofit liberal advocacy group. He is the nephew of former Wisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl and also worked as an executive for the Milwaukee Bucks NBA team.

The Associated Press called the race at 10:26 p.m.

On Tuesday night, Grothman was at the Fond Du Lac Knights of Columbus Hall to celebrate his win.

“It was a good race, a race that was decided by issues; be it on immigration, welfare reform, be it on over-regulation of government,” Grothman said.

He credited his win to “a lot of common sense in this district, people are not swayed by who has the most ads on television.”

In one way, shape, or form the 6th Congressional District has been in Republican hands since the late-1960s.

The district encompasses much of mid-central and parts of southern Wisconsin including the Fond Du Lac region, Sheboygan and west of Wisconsin Dells. The district was held by former Rep. Tom Petri for more than 30 years.

Grothman said he generally agrees with President Donald Trump’s foreign policies and tax cuts.

“I stand with Donald Trump and anybody who says we’re going to be reducing Social Security or Medicare in the near future is subject to misinformation. That’s not going to happen,” Grothman said Tuesday night.

Kohl has said one issue that came up among voters was access to affordable health care. He acknowledged he has name recognition because he has “an uncle in the business.” But he said he is a “different person.”

On Tuesday night, Kohl was at the Milwaukee Ale House with supporters.
