AVB Community Band Concert “Mystery& Wonder”

October 20 @ 7:00 pm9:00 pm
Free

Join the AVB Community Band for the second concert of its 44th season on Monday, Oct. 20, with an evening entitled “Mystery & Wonder” beginning at 7 p.m. at the beautiful Ashwaubenon Performing Arts Center (PAC), 2391 S. Ridge Road in Ashwaubenon.
Doors open at 6 p.m.
Admission is at no charge, with donations appreciated during intermission and following the concert.
The Oct. 20 evening of music is sponsored, in part, by Nature’s Best Floral and Boutique & Cotter Funeral Home.
Our evening of music is also made possible by our ongoing, sustaining AVB Community Band Donors who are recognized in each concert program, our advertisers and by our audience members who support the band with their donations at each concert.
We thank each and every one of you for your support to continue our mission of “Music for a Lifetime.”
The theme for the 2025-2026 concert season is “Come Together: Music That Inspires and Unites.”
Our featured vocalist for the evening is an audience favorite, acclaimed Wisconsin vocalist, recording artist and songwriter Rändi Fay.
Named one of the “female musicians who paved the way in Wisconsin” by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry (March 2022), she has participated in diverse, worldwide collaborations with recognized talents such as producer Hans Christian (Sturgeon Bay), Woody Mankowski (Los Angeles), producer/songwriter Shane Adams (Nashville) and songwriter Dmitry Zaystev (Rhythmystica-Moscow). She recently released her seventh CD, titled “Morning Snow.”
The evening of music includes “enchanting and intriguing selections that evoke curiosity and imagination,” said Mike Ajango, director of the AVB Community Band.
“Yes, there will be some music that will put you in the spirit of Halloween, like ‘Haunted Carousel’ and the familiar movie themes in ‘Music for a Darkened Theatre,’” he said. “But with all of the selections, we ask you to listen for the ‘enchanted’ and ‘intriguing’ – we invite you to use your imagination.”
The AVB Community Band features 75 musicians, all of whom volunteer their time – including the directors. The associate director is Paul Oleksy. The narrator for each concert is Bruce Deadman.
During the evening, we will remember Doug Youra, a longtime tuba player with the AVB Community Band. Doug passed away on Aug. 28.
The concert will open with composer Rossano Galante’s “Mt. Everest,” a sweeping piece that evokes the epic grandeur, beauty and challenging nature of the world’s tallest mountain.
The spooky “Haunted Carousel” will be followed by Rändi Fay singing the Rodgers & Hart classic, “Blue Moon.”
The dynamic piece “Vertigo” by composer Chris Bernotas will be followed by music from Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Cats.”
The second half opens with “Music for a Darkened Theatre,” featuring music from the film scores of Danny Elfman, such as “Beetlejuice” and “Spider-Man.”
The audience is in for another treat, when Rändi Fay sings “My Funny Valentine” by Rodgers & Hart.
The powerful and familiar “Mars (From The Planets)” by Gustav Holst will be followed by Fay joining the band again for the wonderful “Come Fly With Me.”
The evening closes out with “Selections from Aladdin.”
“We had a great audience at our season opener on Sept. 15, with lots of familiar faces and new friends in the audience. But there’s always room for more to join our AVB audience family,” Ajango said. “Invite a friend or two to join you for the evening.”
“And remember, we’ll be honoring our veterans at our concert on Monday, Nov. 17, and we’re back at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts at UW-Green Bay to celebrate the holidays. That concert will be on Thursday, Dec. 11,” he said.
Founded as the Allouez Village Band by Robert Seering, the organization rebranded for its 40th season as the AVB Community Band – AVB stands for “All-Volunteer Band” and better identifies the organization as including membership from throughout the area.
The AVB Community Band also accepts used musical instruments in good condition for use by area schoolchildren.
