Paul Merkelo is the acclaimed principal trumpeter of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and he recently released a blockbuster recording featuring arguably the four most popular concertos for his instrument—concertos that also serve as powerful vehicles for his virtuosity, lyrical gifts, and sensitive interpretations.

The title of the recording, “The Enlightened Trumpet,” is derived from The Age of Enlightenment, during which all the music on the collection was composed.

Merkelo elicits gorgeous tone from the three trumpets used on the recording. The Telemann concerto, the earliest of the four, is particularly brilliant without sounding too pointed or overpowering The opening movement of the Mozart has a lovely, cantabile feel and flow. And the articulation throughout is unbelievably precise while maintaining a deeply felt connection to the music.
