Update: A University of Wisconsin-Madison Athletic Department release published on Monday evening officially confirms that Greg Gard has signed a contract to become the team’s permanent head coach.
Greg Gard is set to permanently take over as coach of the University of Wisconsin-Madison men’s basketball team starting on Tuesday, according to reports from multiple outlets that cite sources close to the UW hiring process.
Gard was a long-time assistant for iconic Badgers coach Bo Ryan, and has been serving as an interim head coach since December 2015, when Ryan retired mid-season.

Since taking over the top job, Gard has been credited for turning the team around after a rocky start to the season and keeping alive a NCAA tournament streak that goes back to 1999.
Jim Polzin of the Wisconsin State Journal wrote that the announcement is expected during a press conference Tuesday afternoon, following a Monday evening meeting by the UW Board of Regents to OK the move.
