Walker Says He Expects Senate Will Come Around On Tax Cuts

Senate Majority Leader Currently Doesn't Have Enough Votes To Approve Plan

Gov. Scott Walker said he thinks state lawmakers will eventually support his proposed tax cuts even if they add to Wisconsin’s structural deficit.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said after Walker’s State of the State speech that he didn’t have the votes yet to pass Walker’s plans. Several GOP senators have complained about how Walker’s tax cuts would add about $100 million to future deficits.

Asked by reporters if he needed to make any changes, Walker said he thought senators would ultimately support his plan once they hear from constituents:

Walker: “I don’t hear people say that the tax burden is too low in our state or even that it’s just right. I repeatedly hear people say, ‘No, we want more of our money back.’ We think the best way to fuel the economy and keep it rolling is to put more money back in the hands of the taxpayers and employers of the state, so we’re going to keep pushing for that.”

Walker likely won’t have trouble finding support for his plans in the state Assembly. Speaker Robin Vos said he wants to pass them right away.
