Communities in northern and central Wisconsin lead a new list of the most-affordable places to live in the state.

The rankings by Smart Asset, a New York financial analysis company, are based on the cost of housing, property taxes, closing costs, and average income.

Superior is number one in the state, followed by the northeastern and north-central Wisconsin communities of Marinette, Antigo, Merrill, Berlin, New London, Two Rivers and Wisconsin Rapids. Beloit and Little Chute round out the top 10.

Jim Ronding, owner of Remax One Realty in Superior, said, “It’s great. We like to be number one in something.”

“And it’s such a beautiful place in this area, with Lake Superior right at our door. To be affordable for people around here is just a bonus as well,” Ronding added.

Superior is ranked number 57 out of all communities in the nation. Mesquite, Texas, is number one on the national list.
