Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, this is a very readable historical account of several key moments in the lives of Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton, Madison, Burr, and others following the ratification of the Constitution in 1788. It shows that partisan politics, defamatory rhetoric, and secret deals were part of US politics from the beginning, and suggests that they may be a necessary cost of popular elections in a democratic republic.
