We open this edition of Higher Ground with South Africa’s famed choral ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Their vocal vocal styles include isi-ca-tha-mi-ya (singing soflty) and mbube (lion). Soft singing lion. They rose to fame as a result of singing with Paul Simon on his 1986 album Graceland. Today they have gleaned multiple awards, including four Grammy Awards. Formed by Joseph Shabalala in 1960 the group has become what they call a “mobile musical academy”, teaching people about South Africa and its culture. Ladysmith renders an anthem titled Isi-man-ga So-lom-h-laba, the wonder of this world. Word 2002, Narada, 2002

2. Ricardo Lemvo ‘Padre George’ Alb Tk 6 4.44

Ricardo Lehm-vo is a Democratic of Republic singer of Angolan descent, now based in Los Angeles. His music combines Cuban salsa with Padre Z’Georzge.
