University of Wisconsin-Madison students began moving in and out of off-campus housing over the weekend, meaning there is plenty of curbside trash, or for some — treasure.

Last year during moving days, students threw away over 1 million pounds of trash and UW-Madison’s Office of Sustainability is helping to reduce that number by bringing their unwanted items to a donation site at Lot 45, located at 165 N. Mills St.

People can bring their unwanted items — such as clothes, furniture, electronics, kitchen items and other household items — to the free donation site.

St. Vincent de Paul is also offering a donation site at U-Haul, 602 W. Washington Ave.

City of Madison Recycling Coordinator Bryan Johnson said students should think about where their trash goes.

“It goes into the landfill,” Johnson said. “And every little bit matters that goes in there because it will fill up. We have about 20 years of life left on that landfill.”

Leases for the majority of university area apartments are up Aug. 14 and 15.

Recycling trucks in downtown Madison collected furniture and other large items Sunday, though people may be able to snag stray items the following days.
