Senator Baldwin Visits Milwaukee, Plugs Her Budget Amendment

By

U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin says she hopes her plan to create regional manufacturing hubs stays in the federal budget.

Baldwin made one of her first public appearances in Milwaukee since the city voted overwhelmingly for her in the November election. The senator toured the Global Water Center, a private and university research site that plans to open this year.

Dean Amhaus of the Milwaukee Water Council told Baldwin the hope is to create a research ecosystem: “To be able to get the large corporations again and their staff working with the graduate students, working with the professors, so you get to bring them together.”

Baldwin recently sponsored a Senate budget amendment to create hubs that would pair manufacturers, local governments and higher education to develop region-specific technologies and products.

She says she knows the House of Representatives may not agree with the Senate: “That said, this places an emphasis on manufacturing, and it won very broad support in the U.S. Senate.”

Baldwin will resume Senate work later this spring.
