Milwaukee plans to enforce a 10 p.m. curfew for city residents under the age of 18 in an effort to reduce protests over Saturday’s police shooting of an African-American man.
The two days of protests over the shooting of 23-year-old Sylville Smith have included fires, dozens of gunshots and the wounding of an 18-year-old Milwaukee man.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said that until further notice, a 10 p.m. curfew for those under age 18 will be more strictly enforced because he doesn’t want children at protests. The usual summer curfew is 11 p.m.

“This is not the place you go to gawk,” Barrett said. “It is not the place you go to take pictures. It’s not the place you go to drive your car around right now.”
Barrett said he and the Milwaukee city attorney are discussing broader curfew steps, but no details have been released.
Milwaukee County is shutting down one of the protest sites, Sherman Park, from 6 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday.
