Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Russ Feingold said if the Obama administration paid $400 million to Iran as ransom for four Americans, he’s against the action.

More details about what was disclosed in January have to come out, Feingold said Monday in Pewaukee.

“Well look, I don’t think there should be ransom for a situation like this,” he said. “I’m against it, and would never support something like that. I don’t have access to exactly what happened here. I’m not just going to accept without any opportunity to look that that’s what happened.”

Incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson also said he’s against America paying ransoms because it encourages more hostage-taking.

President Barack Obama rejected the allegations of ransom, saying the payment helped settle a claim by Iran over a failed arms deal from decades ago.
