While Tax Day is still around two months away, there might be some who have already filed their tax return. If a person qualifies for a refund, most refunds are issued in less than 21 calendar days, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

If there’s concern about why a refund hasn’t arrived beyond that time period, tax expert Mary Mellem suggested making sure that a return went through and wasn’t rejected somehow. For example, if a program like TurboTax was used, Mellem advised checking through that.

“I would certainly go back to the source,” said Mellem, who runs Ashwaubenon Tax Professionals with her husband. She added that it’s important to make sure there’s an acceptance document showing the return was taken.

Another way to check the status of a refund is to use the IRS’ tool, “Where’s My Refund?” It’s updated no more than once every 24 hours, and is usually done overnight, according to the agency’s website. If using the tool, the IRS suggests checking it 24 hours after the agency receives an e-filed return or four weeks following the mailing of a paper return.

According to the agency, people with concerns about a refund date should call the IRS if:

    • It’s been 21 days or more since electronically filing their return.
    • It’s been more than six weeks since the mailing of the paper return.
    • Users of the “Where’s My Refund” tool directs the person to call the agency.

Also from the IRS, calling will not speed up getting a refund. A refund’s status can only be researched if it’s been 21 days or more since e-filing, more than 6 weeks since the mailing of a paper return or if a person has been directed to contact the agency.
