The owner of the Wisconsin Woodchucks baseball team is moving forward with a $3 million renovation of the team’s historic ballpark in Wausau.

Just last year, a new entrance and neighborhood playgrounds were built for Wausau’s Athletic Park. Woodchucks’ owner Mark Macdonald said he’s now ready for “phase two” of the renovation.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

“We’re going to go down the third base line and basically replace everything, new bleachers, a new concession stand with a group outing area on top, and all new restrooms,” he said.

Macdonald said the work won’t affect the exterior stone wall on the third base side of the old, urban ballpark.

“We have pictures in our office of ballgames being played there in 1912, and next to the field are Model T’s and horse drawn carriages,” he said. “The historic wall was constructed as part of a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project in the Depression. It was completed in 1939.”

The renovation of the Northwoods League ballpark is being done without any tax dollars.
