Wisconsin’s unemployment rate inched higher in July, from 5.7 percent to 5.8 percent.

A monthly report from the state Department of Workforce Development said there were 3,200 private-sector jobs created in July, mainly in the service industry.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke pounced on the higher unemployment figures, and blamed them on Gov. Walker’s policies.

“With the new jobs numbers today we can see it’s not working,” said Burke. “We’re not getting any better, and in fact the pace in 2014 is worse than 2013, which was worse than 2010 or 2011. And so, the longer he is in office, the worse it’s getting.”

Burke made her comments at a Wausau fundraiser.

Wisconsin’s 5.8 percent figure is lower than the national rate of 6.2 percent.
