Wisconsin Legislature Holding Foxconn Hearing In Sturtevant

The next public hearing on Foxconn’s plans to build a $10 billion manufacturing campus will be held near where the factory would be.

The Legislature’s budget-writing Joint Finance Committee announced Friday it will hold a public hearing Tuesday at Gateway Technical College in Sturtevant. This hearing on the $3 billion tax incentive bill comes after the Assembly passed the measure with bipartisan support Thursday.

An Assembly committee previously held a public hearing on the proposal earlier this month. It must pass the Senate and be signed by Gov. Scott Walker before becoming law.

Foxconn has not announced where it plans to build the massive facility, but it is eyeing locations in Racine and Kenosha counties.

The Taiwan-based company says the plant could employ up to 13,000 people.

Also on Friday, the budget-writing committee co-chairs said the panel will resume its work on the state’s spending plan next week after a two-month break.

The panel will meet Thursday to vote on some of the remaining issues in the budget. The agenda does not call for the committee to vote on transportation funding, the biggest unresolved issue.

The committee has not been since June 15, resulting in the budget now being six weeks past due. Spending is continuing under the old budget, but not having a new spending plan in place soon could result in problems for school districts and ongoing road construction projects.

Republicans who control the Legislature have been unable to reach a deal with Walker over how to pay for roads, among other issues.
