Wisconsin Lawmakers Kick Off Celebration Of Capitol Building’s Centennial Year

Former Governors Among Those Who Lauded Building's History

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former governors, lawmakers and state Supreme Court justices gathered in the Capitol rotunda Tuesday to begin a year-long celebration of the state Capitol building’s 100th anniversary.

Along with Walker, former governors Scott McCallum, Tony Earl and Tommy Thompson gathered in the rotunda to celebrate.

Thompson praised what he called, “the people’s house.”

“I have had the privilege to travel all over the world, at capitols in every state, and I want to tell you something ladies and gentlemen, I don’t think there’s a more beautiful capitol or building any place in the country,” he said.

Walker took the opportunity to recall his first visit to the building as an elementary school student.

“It’s just so exciting to think of that look that you had when you were a kid for the first time here,” Walker said.

The ceremony also included the unveiling of an exhibit from the Wisconsin Historical Society, “A Century of Stories – Celebrating 100 years at the Capitol,” which will be on display in the Capitol rotunda through November.
