  • Bill Targeting Sanctuary Cities In Wisconsin Gets Hearing Thursday

Lawmakers held a hearing at the State Capitol Thursday for a new bill that would punish so-called sanctuary cities in Wisconsin. A sanctuary city is defined as a city that limits its cooperation with the national government’s effort to enforce immigration law. Places like Madison and Milwaukee are considered sanctuary cities in Wisconsin. As this issue is being considered in Wisconsin, the U.S. Department of Justice gave five jurisdictions a final warning about their support of sanctuary policies. The D.O.J. gave New York, Chicago, New Orleans, Cook County Illinois, and Philadelphia until October 27 to prove they aren’t defying federal law when it comes to immigration. We talk to a political scientist about the issue of sanctuary cities in Wisconsin and nationally.

What do you think about sanctuary cities? How do you think Wisconsin should treat sanctuary cities? What kind of immigration policy would you like to see Wisconsin adopt? How much power do you think states should have when it comes to immigration policy?
