Northern states are usually cast as the most racially tolerant, but they also have a history of violence against African-Americans. We talk with two historians about what we can learn from our area’s past. We also talk with the organizer of an annual Wisconsin-themed festival in California.

Featured in this Show

  • America's History Of Northern White Violence

The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 is remembered as an unjust and dark moment in American history. A white mob attacked residents, homes, and businesses in the predominately Black Greenwood neighborhood of the Oklahoma city. Our guests explain why, unfortunately, this type of violence was more common in the 19th century than we understand.

  • What's Behind This Wisconsin-Themed Annual California Picnic

For decades transplanted Wisconsinites have held a Badger State picnic in Sonoma County, California. We talk to one of the owners, a Milwaukee native, about the picnic, and how it had to be canceled this year.
