Weekend Rainfall Eases Drought

By

The rainy weekend that drenched a good deal of Wisconsin could put a dent in the state’s drought.

Storm systems passed through mostly central and southern Wisconsin with rains ranging from a half inch to nearly five inches across much of east central Wisconsin. UW Extension Agriculture Weather Specialist Bill Bland says the state will need more rain to get out of this drought, “That rain we just had? It’s very valuable. It’s a start to rebuilding our bank account”

The National Weather Service says much of far southern Wisconsin needs as much as ten more inches of rain to fully recover. But, last weekend’s storms did pay some dividends. La Crosse County Agriculture Agent Steve Huntzicker says they’ll help rejuvenate some crops and plant life, “Initially I think it’s going to help anything that perennial out there. Not help the crops that are currently being harvested. But help restore pastures possibly some of our alfalfa grass and hay fields. That are in the area.”
