Town Of Plover Incident Leaves 2 Shot, 1 Stabbed; Victims Expected To Recover

An 18-year-old central Wisconsin man is now in custody following a shooting early Thursday morning in the Town of Plover in Portage County.

Alec Varney was arrested without incident following what Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas called “a high-risk traffic stop” by officers from the Plover and Stevens Point police departments.

Varney had been considered “armed and dangerous” after fleeing the Town of Plover residence where two young men were injured with a shotgun blast, and a third received minor stab wounds.

Lukas said all three of the victims received medical attention and are expected to make a full recovery.

The shooting and stabbing occurred during what Lukas called a “social gathering” at 4:49 a.m. Thursday in the 3800 block of Bluebird Drive in the Town of Plover.

Lukas said the victims and suspect knew each other.

Varney was the subject of a seven-hour manhunt before he was take into custody.
