The new year brings with it a bit more paperwork for Wisconsin’s used car dealers: The state is now requiring them to make more disclosures to keep up with changing technology.
The Wisconsin Buyers Guide is posted on a used car to disclose if any of its systems don’t work. A newly revised guide went into effect on Jan. 1.
Chris Snyder is general counsel to the Wisconsin Automobile and Truck Dealers Association which represents 800 members. Snyder said the form was updated to cover electric and hybrid engines, along with other technology.

“We’ve been filling out these forms for years and now there’s a section on here for navigation,” said Snyder. “So if the car comes with navigation, the person who’s inspecting it is going to have to turn on the navigation and make sure that it works.”
Snyder said Wisconsin is the only state with its own disclosure form. Others conform to guidelines set by the Federal Trade Commission.
