On February 22 at 10 a.m. Wisconsin Public Radio’s Route 51 looks at the history and current status of Wisconsin’s remaining old growth forests with John Bates, author and naturalist from Manitowish Waters whose new book is Our Living Ancestors, The History and Ecology of Old-Growth Forests in Wisconsin (and Where to Find Them). Host Glen Moberg will ask Bates where to find the remaining stands of the state’s legendary Pinery, and why they escaped the ax during the great timber harvest period of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Bates is also the author of A Northwoods Companion, Spring and Summer; A Northwoods Companion, Fall and Winter; Seasonal Guide to the Natural Year; Trailside Botony. 101 Favorite Trees, Shrubs, and Wildflowers of the Upper Midwest; and Cold to the Bone, Poems by John Bates.
