Mahalia Jackson “The Golden Voice Of Gospel’

Air Date:
Heard On The Odyssey Series

It is difficult to imagine a more definitive practitioner of Afrocentric Sacred Gospel Music in the United States, than Mahalia Jackson whose iconic voice became a symbol of the Civil Rights Movement during the March On Washington in 1963. Unfazed by a rash of solicitations for her to join the ranks of other gospel artists who had crossed over to the secular side of the isle, Jackson stayed true to her musical roots and the genre’s mission designed to uplift and encourage a people – some of whom lived on the margins of life.
