  • Despite Advances in Technology, Typewriters Hang On

In an era of computers, laptops, smartphones and tablets, it’s almost a quaint notion that the typewriter could still hold a place in today’s economy.

But if you work for a funeral home, a government agency, or a prison, there’s a chance your job is made considerably easier by one of these machines.

In a recent article, Wall Street Journal reporter Laura Kusisto explored why these industries still rely on the typewriter. The answer? Mostly, the forms seem to be a whole lot easier to fill out.

“I thought about the experience of filling out a form online, like that PDF form, and how frustrating it is. And it sort of made sense to me, that if you were filling out a ton of forms every day, it might be easier to bang them out.”

In addition, transparent typewriters are popular amongst prisoners. Because computers are a lot easier to tamper with, in addition to being a vehicle for contraband objects, the see-through typewriter has become a popular alternative.
