It’s been 60 years since the birth of America’s Interstate highway system, the ambitious public works project that now consists of over 47,000 miles of roads, ramps and bridges. But as the Interstates have aged and drivers using them have increased, funding for maintenance hasn’t kept up, leading to a backlog of roughly $189 billion for needed improvements. We look at the road ahead for our nation’s Interstates.
