Senate Dem Looking For Specifics In Governor’s State Of The State

By

Wisconsin state Senate Minority Leader Chris Larson (D) is asking Gov. Walker to offer a specific long-term vision when Walker gives his State of the State speech Wednesday night.

Walker is expected to make an upbeat speech, talking about possible property tax cuts and income tax reductions, made possible by a huge surplus in the state’s general fund.

Larson is the state Senate minority leader. Larson says maybe the governor could look a little ways further in the future. “Every time we have a little extra money in the surplus, he makes promises for it that only last a short time,” he said, “so it’d be nice to see beyond the horizon of where he wants to take our state.”

Larson suggests paying down some of the state’s long-term debt obligations, and in the short term, eliminating a Medicaid deficit and spelling out who would benefit the most from any income or property tax reductions. If Walker is re-elected as governor this fall, many analysts expect his long-term political plan to be a bid for the White House.
