Dozens of schools in northwestern Wisconsin closed as a winter storm descended on the region.
A warm start to the day Thursday was transitioning from rain to snow, sleet and freezing rain. Schools in more than 50 communities closed, including Eau Claire, Menomonie, Neillsville and Ladysmith.
A winter storm warning was posted for Price and Sawyer counties with a winter weather advisory elsewhere in the region. Snow of varying intensity is expected through Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service based in Sullivan, the mild temperatures the state has seen this week will be short lived. A cold front is sweeping through the state, causing the temperatures to drop Thursday.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until at least 8 p.m. for portions of south central Wisconsin.
