Sanders: Racial Inequality Tied To Income Inequality

Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders differed on how to improve race relations as they debated Thursday night in Milwaukee.

Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont, said if the federal government would raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans, there would be more money to help disadvantaged people, including many racial minorities.

“What we will do is say, ‘Instead of giving tax breaks to billionaires, we are going to create millions of jobs for low-income kids so they are not hanging out on street corners,’” Sanders said. “We’re going to make sure that those kids stay in school or able to get a college education.”

Former Secretary of State Clinton disagreed with the premise of a question that suggested race relations have not improved under President Barack Obama. However, she did promise to improve employment, housing and education, and change policing and incarceration practices.
