Record Lows Predicted for First Freeze

Saturday marks the first day of fall, and with that comes the first widespread freeze across Wisconsin.

While some parts of Wisconsin dipped below 32 degrees earlier this week, much of the state could hit below freezing temperatures Saturday night.

Lee Ireland is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in La Crosse. Ireland says, “We’ll be having a cold front come across the area late tonight into Saturday morning. The high pressure will follow in behind that Saturday night that will allow the skies to clear out. With the winds diminishing, looks like there’s the potential for temperatures to drop down into the upper 20s to the lower 30s for a good share of the area.”

Ireland says it is a little early for southern Wisconsin to hit freezing temperatures, but right on time for northern half of the state. He says some areas are predicted to break record lows.

Ireland suggests people cover plants and detach their garden hoses. Frost could also develop, so he recommends people put an ice scraper in their car.
