Gov. Scott Walker’s administration has abandoned plans to expand another major highway project in Wisconsin.

The state is shelving a proposed expansion of Interstate 39/90/94 between Madison and Wisconsin Dells. The decision was first reported Wednesday by the Wisconsin State Journal.

The state Department of Transportation had flagged that interstate as a high priority for expansion, due to a high volume of tourist traffic to the Dells.

The state is in the middle of adding lanes to Interstate 39/90 south of Madison to the Illinois border.

Walker was asked Wednesday if halting this project north of Madison could hurt tourism.

“We’ve stepped it up in the past, from the state line up here,” Walker said. “We think that’s incredibly important. We’ve fulfilled our commitment there, and we’ll look at other ways of doing that going forward.”

Walker’s budget proposal also abandoned plans to expand I/94 west of Milwaukee.

Opponents say delaying projects will cost the state more money in the future.
