Hundreds of University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh employees face temporary layoffs as the campus deals with the financial fallout of responses to COVID-19.
Chancellor Andy Leavitt announced the furloughs Monday.
“Causing this disruption to lives is difficult,” Leavitt wrote in a public letter. “It hurts people. Our hand is forced.”

The university will put “all 12-month employees who are not currently working and other employees who will be identified this week” on unpaid leave from May 4 through Aug. 31, Leavitt said. Other employees will face intermittent furloughs from May 4 through June 2021.
UW-Oshkosh expects to lose about $7 million as a result of COVID-19. The university is set to receive $6.2 million in federal relief funds, half of which will go directly to students who incurred their own financial losses.
Other campuses in the UW System are expected to institute their own furloughs. On Friday the UW System Administration announced 14 furlough days for 588 employees.
