UW-Extension To Hold Community Meeting On Superior Refinery

Meeting Seeks To Gauge People's Concerns, Questions

By

The University of Wisconsin-Extension in Douglas County is holding a community listening session next week on the Husky Energy refinery explosions and fires.

The meeting is an opportunity for people to come together and discuss what happened, according to James Anderson, community and economic development educator with UW-Extension.

“We’ve invited the regulatory agencies — EPA, DNR, as well as public health — if they want to talk about what the response has been, what they’ll be doing, what the timeline is, how they’ll disseminate that information,” said Anderson.

He said they also plan to have small group discussions.

“Those smaller groups will be led by a trained facilitator that will ask some structured questions and basically as a listening opportunity for the community to share what are their anxieties, their concerns, and their unanswered questions,” he said. “If necessary, we’ll do some ranking of those of what are their top concerns.”

Anderson said the information collected will be shared with agencies and Husky Energy.

The meeting will be held on Monday, May 14, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Superior Middle School cafeteria.
