A federal transportation department official says the Trump administration’s infrastructure package is “nearly ready to go.”
The transportation initiative will move ahead after final congressional action on health care and tax law changes, U.S. DOT Deputy Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs Anthony Bedell said Wednesday at the convention of the National Congress of American Indians in Milwaukee.
Bedell said rural transportation needs won’t be forgotten.

“The administration understands the rural communities, including the tribal communities, face different funding constraints and infrastructure issues than their urban counterparts,” Bedell said. “And while the specific provisions of the infrastructure package have yet to be released, I assure you those are parts that are going to be in the package.”
Bedell added that $200 billion in federal money will help trigger $1 trillion in state, local and private-sector spending. A core principle will be to streamline construction of projects, he said.
Some Democrats say they doubt the White House will come forward with a proposal and are taking part in a bipartisan caucus to look at funding ideas.
