A longtime alternative New York newspaper is ceasing production. The Village Voice was widely credited as the first modern “alt-weekly,” and since its creation in 1955, hundreds of alternative papers have sprung up all over the country. But just how are they doing in today’s media landscape? We take stock of America’s alt-weeklies, and look at what a community loses when its alternative paper shutters.
