The Racine Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead and an officer in the hospital in Caledonia.

According to police, a Caledonia officer was responding to a burglary in progress Sunday evening when the suspect approached him with an “edged weapon” and caused a serious head wound.

The unidentified injured officer fatally shot 38-year-old Jared Nelson of Racine, who died at the scene. The officer was treated and released from the hospital for the injury.

Lt. Gary Larsen with the Caledonia Police Department said the Racine Police Department will handle the investigation.

“The Caledonia Police Department would also like to express it’s appreciation for the community, for support, well wishes and prayers,” Larsen said. “We are very humbled by the overwhelming support of the community.”

The officer has worked for the department for four years. The Racine Journal Times reports police haven’t said whether the officer was wearing a body camera and they haven’t elaborated on what the edged weapon was.

Larsen declined to give an additional information.

“We don’t want to give you information that turns out to be incorrect,” he explained. “So it’s still an on going investigation.”
